Superposition
When I was 13 years old, at Romig Junior High School, in Anchorage, we had a computer lab with about a dozen or so Apple ][+’s.
I loved these machines. We’d come in and play games on them, write programs on them, and generally burn through most of the time we were allowed to spend on them.
My lust for the Apple ][+ was so great that I flirted outrageously with girls that I knew who’s parents had bought them, just so I could hang out with them after school and play games with them.
I spent hours at their homes, playing Ultima, Ultima ][, and Wizardry. I can still remember, to this day, the hot awe and bittersweet longing that these amazing machines stirred in my heart.
Now, 28 years later (WOW), I am composing this post on an iPad, using a bluetooth keyboard that I purchased today. I. Am. Floored.
I try to imagine going back in time and telling my younger self that the company that made this was going to grow, and prosper, and that they would continue to make better, and better machines. And then I would tell myself about the iPad, and everything that my younger self would be able to use it for.
This would be so far beyond flying cars and teleportation booths, it’d be ridiculous.
You folks have come an incredibly long way. And I’m still astounded by you.
